Johannesburg, South Africa – 7 August 2024 – Teraco today announced the release of its third annual Sustainability Report. The 2024 report demonstrates notable progress towards the company’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals across its seven operational facilities in South Africa.
Teraco has made huge strides towards its 100% renewable energy goal, which includes securing grid access for a 120MW utility scale solar plant that will produce more than 340 million kWh of solar energy per annum when complete. Teraco also awarded preferred bidder status to a local Independent Power Producer (IPP) to supply its facilities with wind energy.
Teraco continues to focus on implementing energy-saving initiatives across its facilities, achieving a 2023 PUE target of 1.52, and realising 3 112 232 kWh in demand side savings, with more than 3 065 mtCO2e avoided during the year. Teraco has also expanded the total investment in its rooftop solar programme to more than 6MW across all operational facilities, with a goal to reach 10MW by December 2026.
“Climate change and inequality are some of the most pressing challenges society faces today,” says Jan Hnizdo, CEO at Teraco. “For us a business, these issues are a focused priority. Addressing them demands ambitious thinking and progressive action from ourselves, governments, businesses, and consumers. As a leading data centre operator, we understand the resource demands of our operations and are dedicated to reducing our consumption intensity through investments in energy and water efficient technologies like advanced closed-loop cooling systems and optimised cooling monitoring. By streamlining our energy use, we have cut our CO2 emissions intensity and are progressively increasing our use of renewable energy sources as quickly as we can.”
The third edition of Teraco’s Sustainability Report highlights the company’s progress and future trajectory as a responsible organisation. Additional key achievements from the past year include expanding carbon reporting to include scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions; retaining ISO 50001 and ISO 14001 certifications across all facilities; and seeing the first learners graduate from the Teraco Data Centre Academy, with most graduates being absorbed into the business.
“Our conscious approach to investments in social upliftment through education, digital inclusion, and skills development initiatives is essential to promoting diversity and addressing inequality. Given the pivotal role of data centres in the global digital economy, we recognise our responsibility to act swiftly and progressively. While we are tremendously proud of our current efforts, we remain committed to doing much more and accelerating progress across the sustainability agenda,” he adds.
