Cape Town, South Africa – 12 November 2025 – Teraco: A Digital Realty Company and provider of interconnection platforms and vendor-neutral colocation data centres, today announced the commencement of its CT1 data centre expansion, located in Rondebosch, Cape Town.
CT1 currently offers 2,500 square metres of data halls with three megawatts (MW) of critical IT load, which will be expanded by a further 1,000 square metres of data halls and 2MW of critical IT load. The construction is expected to be completed in early 2027. The facility serves as a carrier-dense interconnection hub, strategically located at the southernmost tip of Africa.
“This investment at CT1 reflects our continued confidence in Cape Town as one of Africa’s most digitally connected cities,” says Jan Hnizdo, Teraco CEO. “CT1 has always held a special place in Teraco’s story – it is where our journey began in 2008. By expanding CT1, we are not only working to meet growing client demand for interconnection and deployment capacity, but also strengthening our long-term commitment to the region’s digital future.”
As part of Teraco’s broader Cape Town Campus, the CT1 facility provides enterprises with direct access to Platform Teraco, an ecosystem comprising over 250 network providers, major cloud on-ramps, subsea cable systems, more than 50 managed service providers, and home to the NAPAfrica internet exchange point (IXP), Africa’s largest and fastest growing IXP.
Cape Town’s strategic location, combined with the landing of major subsea cable systems such as ACE, Equiano, SAT-3, SAFE, WACS and 2Africa, continues to drive the region’s growth as a digital gateway to Africa. The CT1 expansion ensures Teraco is well positioned to support increasing enterprise and hyperscale demand for resilient, scalable, and sustainable infrastructure.
“The planned expansion of CT1 underscores Teraco’s long-term vision of investing in world-class digital infrastructure that enables growth, innovation, and connectivity across Africa. This is a full-circle moment for us – expanding on the site where Teraco started and preparing it for the next generation of digital transformation,” he adds.
The plans for an expanded CT1 facility will further enhance Teraco’s ability to serve businesses across industries including telecoms, financial services, e-commerce, logistics, and retail, all of which rely on resilient, carrier-neutral infrastructure to power their digital operations and reach global cloud and content delivery ecosystems.
The plans for the CT1 expansion currently underway enlarge Teraco’s growing data centre platform, increasing critical power load capacity to 191MW. This includes the Isando Campus (JB1/JB3/JB5: 70MW), Bredell Campus (JB2/JB4: 64MW), Cape Town Campus (CT1/CT2: 55MW), and Durban (DB1: 2MW).
