Johannesburg, South Africa – 27 October 2022 – Teraco, Africa’s leading carrier-neutral data centre colocation provider, today announced Africa’s first successful Telecom Infra Project (TIP) Phoenix solution deployment.

The optical white box transponder solution, Phoenix, has been deployed in Teraco’s Cape Town data centre campus.

“An open and disaggregated network architecture allows operators the flexibility to choose the hardware and software combinations that best suit their unique requirements. The solution employs open and standards-based interfaces, which allow for better integration with existing network management systems,” said Andrew Owens, Technical Lead for Interconnection & Peering at Teraco.

TIP Phoenix solution

“We are very excited to be the first in Africa to deploy TIP’s Phoenix solution. Our strong engagement with TIP is helping us to provide a highly secure, direct interconnection to Teraco’s digital ecosystem and direct access to diverse Internet Exchange Points (IXPs). This collaboration further enhances our ability to deliver reliable and cost-effective cross-connection between diverse sites while ensuring reliable connectivity for our clients across an extended network campus.”

Teraco’s physical interconnect cabling, and virtual interconnection system provide flexible and scalable interconnections, including direct access to partners within the established business ecosystems needed to accelerate growth. Teraco’s physical and virtual interconnections allow organisations to connect endpoints quickly, seamlessly, and securely across multiple data centre campuses.

Hanson Tuang, Connectivity Technologies and Ecosystems Manager, Meta, said: “We are pleased to see Teraco taking the lead with the adoption of Phoenix in its production network. The need to scale networks efficiently is a constant challenge for the industry.

With its disaggregated architecture, high capacity and enhanced programmability, the Phoenix solution provides a cost-effective approach for service providers to meet this challenge. We look forward to further collaboration with Teraco in future, and would like to thank NEC for its contribution to this success.”

“NEC is honoured to collaborate with Teraco as it tackles the significant challenge in the optical transport market with the deployment of a disaggregated and open system,” said Sou Satou, Senior Director of the Network Solutions Business Division, NEC Corporation.

“We will continue to support Teraco as a system integrator to demonstrate the scalability and advantage of open systems.”

Anthony Laing, General Manager, Networking, NEC XON, said, “The technology disaggregates hardware and software, and makes high-speed network and data centre interconnectivity far more accessible and affordable. The net results are faster, cheaper internet access for the average user. Lowering barriers to access is vital for Africa where connectivity still isn’t pervasive, and the cost is a bigger concern than in some parts of the world,” he concluded.

About NEC Phoenix

The NEC Phoenix solution comprises Wistron Galileo Flex T hardware, NEC software (based on the open-source network operating system “Goldstone”) and Lumentum 400Gb CFP2-DCO pluggables. NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) and NEC XON (a subsidiary of NEC) supported the implementation of this solution by system integration. Phoenix is an operator-driven initiative developed by TIP’s Open Optical and Transport (OOPT) Disaggregated Optical Systems (DOS) subgroup.  Phoenix defines the requirements for 400Gb optical transponders suited to applications such as data centre interconnect and metro backhaul transport for use with traditional optical systems.
